Most of us take good eyesight for granted and we don’t realize how difficult life can be for somebody living with vision impairments. Even though we understand that being blind is very challenging and poses a lot of practical problems, we never really consider the impact that it has on a person’s mental health.
There is a strong link between mental health issues and poor eyesight and if you suffer from vision impairment, you are more likely to develop issues with anxiety and depression. People that struggle with their eyesight often find social situations difficult. They are self conscious about things like going to a restaurant in case they need help reading the menu, for example. Vision impairment also represents the onset of aging for a lot of people, and when their eyesight starts to fail, they worry about their overall health. This stress and a sense that they are starting to age can lead to depression, especially if eyesight impairment happens when they are relatively young.
This link goes both ways because people that are suffering from depression are less likely to make positive lifestyle changes that help to protect their eyesight. Their eyesight then suffers more, and their mental health problems increase as a result. This creates a vicious cycle that is very difficult to break out of.
What Can You Do?
The good news is, there are ways that you can protect your eyesight and reduce the impact that poor eyesight has on your mental health.
One of the most important things that you can do is have regular eye tests, especially as you get older. This will help you to pick up on any problems early on, so you can get some glasses if you need them. Make sure to buy some good quality frames like the ones from Tom Ford glasses, and have the lenses custom made for you. As long as you have a good quality pair of glasses, you can slow down vision impairment and make sure that your vision is back to normal so you can continue to do all of the things that you normally would.
There are some simple lifestyle changes that you can make as well to help reduce the chances of vision impairment and improve your mental health at the same time. Exercise where possible, has been shown to be very effective at combating mental health problems and it will also improve your overall health and reduce the chances of vision impairment. Alcohol and smoking also increase the chances of vision impairment, and they can worsen the symptoms of mental health in the long term, so you should cut back on drinking and give up smoking if possible.
If you do experience mental health issues as a result of vision impairment, it is important that you have a self care routine in place.
As long as you take steps to protect your eyesight and manage your mental health at the same time, you can stop vision impairment from having a negative impact on your life
