Putting Myself Out There

For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to be a writer. Growing up reading popular magazines such as Smash Hits gave me the idea that I wanted to be a music journalist. I even went as far as applying to college in enrol into a journalism course but was advised by the course coordinator that I would be better suited do a course in communication studies. I guess that was their polite way in saying your writings rubbish.

I never lost the urge to write and attempted many times over the years, from looking into creative writing courses to turning my hand to short story writing. Neither of which amounted to much and I gave up my dream of becoming a world renowned writer.

That was until I started blogging I’ve been doing that off and one for several years, but at the beginning of 2017 I made myself a goal to write more. Then one day I was scrolling through Facebook and saw Zachary Levi share a post from Nerd HQ saying that they were looking for contributors. After thinking it over and speaking to David I emailed the address giving in the post expressing my interest and asking what they were looking for.

Honestly I never expected a reply but I got one very quickly from Matthew who told me they were looking for people to write reviews of games, music, tv and movies as well as the potential to write other pieces as long as he gave the go ahead.

I pitched the idea of a post about visual impairment and video game playing which I emailed to them on 30th January and waited then waited some more and then some more. I was so nervous. I had decided that because I hadn’t had a reply from Matthew that the article was rubbish. But on Wednesday 1st February I was checking twitter and there popped up in my newsfeed my article. I almost screamed in excitement.

After composing myself I clicked the link and smiled when I saw my name printed at the top of the article. There had been some editing done which I’m sure is pretty standard. I’m not sure how many people have read the article but I shared it on all of my social media accounts and have seen on twitter and Facebook that the post was shared and liked. If your interested in reading what I wrote click Here

Is it sad that I printed out a copy of the article and will be keeping it in a folder??

Now the real challenge begins for me to come up with something new to write about each week. Looks like I need to start cinema trips on my own and watching a heck of a lot more tv. The only problem with that is that shows in the U.S. take a lot longer to appear on tv screens in the U.K. which might not be relevant as Nerd HQ is an America based website.

Have you ever put yourself out there in the hopes that your can achieve a dream?

Thanks for reading.

  1. Well done, Nic! I read your article and it’s great. My childhood dream was to be an author, but maybe taking it one day at a time with my blog is a good thing. I’ve learned over the years that my attention span is crap! 😉 xx

    1. Thanks my lovely. I was getting frustrated trying to write something the other day when David made a good point in that you can’t force it it will happen when it happens and I believe that you be an author. Maybe start off with short stories and build it from there. 😀 xx
